After experiencing MUDTEX last year, we dealt with Windtex. With over 20 mph winds, we did our best to grind out each and every point against all the teams we played from across the nation. Coming in seeded 6th for the tournament, we ended with 4th in the tournament, and more importantly, were the dance-off champions (again)! Can't wait to see the final rankings next week as we prep for the series.
After an intensive week of Spring Training before school started, the Queens headed down to Santa Barbara to play teams from the D-1 Southwest region. We went 2-2 on Saturday, grabbing wins over UC Davis and the University of Arizona. On Saturday night, our lovely hosts cooked us a delicious dinner and Kate lost a rosham and had to take a water slide plunge into their freezing cold swimming pool. On Sunday, we had a re-match against San Diego State University. The team worked much better together and at the end, Grace threw up-line to Skid who found Sharone in the end-zone to win on double-game point! We fell to Sonoma State by 2 points for 5th place but learned a lot and got more comfortable playing with our new, young team. Can't wait for Prez Day in San Diego in a few weeks!
We started off the foggy day in Santa Barbara with a fantastic defensive effort, winning 11-3 over UC Santa Cruz. A nice huck from Hannah to Gina sealed the deal.
After a double bye, we were up against UCLA, who threw a zone defense on us. We were quite unprepared for zone, however, by the end of the game we had made great strides and ended the day on a solid note despite losing 8-13. Giving up 5 in a row in the first half is always hard to recover from.
We'll be facing SDSU in quarters at 12:30 on Sunday. Hooray for sleeping in!!
Pie Queens and UGMO (Cal Men's Ultimate) are the 2012 USAU Southwest College Women's Regionals Champions!!!!
This is the first time ever that both the men and women programs are Regional champs in the same year (that anyone can remember). The whole season led up to Regionals, the first tournament of the year that the Queens were at full strength! Our hard work and team depth paid off with a 6-0 tournament record culminating in a thrilling 11-9 win over Sonoma State in the finals.
The Tarts shredded their competition down in Camarillo this weekend, beating Stanford-B 10-7 in the finals to snatch the title of Southwest Development Conference CHAMPS!
